An Easy Way To Cook Fish

Fish is good and good for you but if you are really intimidated by cooking it you don't have to be with a few easy tips. I am a very good cook and until recently I rarely cooked fish because I thought it was difficult. But that couldn't be further from the truth.

The first thing I do in order to cook a nice plate of fish is to buy the fish. You can go to a fish market but that takes a special trip. If you are up for this by all means go there. For my ease and because I am a working mom to four kids I don't always have the time to run to a fish market. I opt to buy frozen fish in my local grocery store. The grocery stores have wonderful fish that is sealed air tight and can be found in the frozen food section. They are not breaded or made with any funky preservatives. They are simply frozen fresh fish. They are individually sealed and usually come in a package of four so if you don't need to eat all four you can just take out the amount you need. My grocery store usually has those packages BOGO (buy one get one free) so when I see the sale, I grab a bunch.

Once you have the fish you will need to thaw only the amount you want to eat. It takes very little time for these packages to thaw so you can do that when you get home and are ready to start preparing your meal. Once the fish is thawed you are ready to cook.

The easiest way to cook fish is in a skillet. Turn the pan on to a medium high heat and let the pan get fairly hot. This will create a nice grill mark and crisp up the outer sides of the fish. You want to prep the fish by sprinkling some olive oil on it along with some salt and pepper. Feel free to add any other herbs you want but I like to keep mine more simply. If you have any lemons you can grate some zest onto it as well or you can save the zest for the end and squeeze the juice over the fish after it is plated.

Believe it or not that is all you need. Now take the fish and place it into the hot skillet and let it cook on both sides for about five minutes each. Remove from the pan and serve on a bed of wild rice or alongside a potato and a salad and you have a wonderful fish dinner.

You can find a wide assortment of fish to cook in this fashion including tilapia which is my all time favorite fish. You can also cook any other type of salmon, orange rougy or swordfish this way. Whatever you find from the store that looks good will work.

Bon Appetite.
